Twenty-two journalists took part in the fifth forum organized by the Ethical Charter of Syrian Media on Sunday under the title “Hate Speech … Why Again?”

The forum, which was organized in the Turkish city of Istanbul, aimed to exchange views on hate speech and the role of the media in contributing to reducing the proportion of this speech.

During the first session, Lailan Dawood presented a presentation on the concepts of hate speech and freedom of expression with the active participation of journalists participating in the forum.

While the second and third sessions were discussed at the forum, which dealt with what can be accepted and what can not be accepted in the media, and what is the role of the Syrian media and its impact in the discourse of hatred widely spread among individuals and institutions of Syrian society.

The Forum concluded with the fourth session, during which a series of recommendations were issued by the participants, most notably the work on completing a terminology dictionary for the hate speech, training and development of the editorial staff of the media institutions, and the convening of awareness seminars to reduce hate speech and its effects.

The Hate Speech Forum is the fifth meeting organized by the Ethical Charter of Syrian Media, as part of a series of meetings and activities aimed at benefiting from regional and international expertise on the ethics of journalism.
